Case Analysis - Paint Industry - Free Essay Example

CAGE ANALYSIS PAINT INDUSTRY Potential for paint manufacturing business in Kenya: Currently, there are four main players in the paint industry in Kenya namely, Crown Paints, Basco Paints, Sadolin and Solai Paints. The paint market mainly consists of two categories- Premium paints and Economy paints. The number of housing complexes, commercial buildings like offices and shopping malls in Kenya have led to increased demand for decorative paint and coatings in the country. Due to rapid urbanization (50% of Kenyaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s population expected to live in urban areas by 2030), the domestic construction industry has started competing in the global space and is creating huge demand for improved quality of decorative paints. According to the Frost Suvillian report on the decorative paints market in Kenya and Tnzania, the market earned total revenues of over $123 million in 2011 and is estimated to reach $190 million by 2018. In order to achieve one of the Governmentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s objective of making Kenya a middle-income country by 2030, Kenyaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Government has passed the National Construction Authority bill which is expected to initiate new construction projects and make the quality of existing infrastructure better. If we take a look at both the economies, Nigeria definitely has a good GDP growth rate and better transparency index. However, Kenya too is not far behind. Following are the reasons for choosing Kenya: Largest country in East Africa: Kenya is known to be the largest and the most developed economy in the East African region. It has the second largest population within the East African Community (EAC) at about 42 million and is growing at a rate of 2% per annum. The country possesses a very high growth prospect as it is supported by an emerging, urban middle class with an increasing purchasing power and demand for high value goods and services. This country alone contributes to more than 40% of East Africaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s total GDP. Strategic Location: As the largest country in East Africa, Kenyaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s strategic location and its highly conducive environment for business makes it an attractive place for investors and several international companies have made it their regional hub. This provides investors an access to the larger EAC and regional markets with over 390 million consumers. Kenyaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s capital, Nairobi is too a huge transport Hub in East Africa which connects Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to numerous destinations around the world. Access to a wide market: Kenya is a member of several regional economic blocs and along with its strategic geographic location, the economy serves as the gateway to the EAC, COMESA, and many other trade arrangements. Potential gains from COMESA: Member Countries: 20 Population: 445 Million Total GDP: USD 360 Billion Trade Arrangements: Kenya also has membership with many trade arrangements and beneficiary to schemes that boost the trade. These schemes comprises of the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), WTO and EAC-EU Trade Agreement. Soon there will also be Tripartite Free Trade Area (FTA) cooperation between EAC, SADC and COMESA which will give access to a huge market with 600 million consumers. Stable political environment and investment policies: New Government: The new Jubilee Administration considers the private sector as the main contributor to economic and social advancement. The government is supporting privatization by divesting its majority shareholdings in State commercial companies via the Nairobi Securities Exchange. Regulatory reforms: Kenya is working towards reducing the cost of doing business. Hence, it is making extensive business regulatory reforms in order to reduce the number of licensing requirements to a large extent and to make the licensing system more transparent. O Brother Where Art Thou Essay Example For Students

O Brother Where Art Thou Essay This old time musical theatrical movie clip was an insightful blast from the past that made you cherish those days where it was inconceivable to not be a gentlemen, and it was a down right shame to be anything less then an honest women. This old time movie with a new age attitude definitely strikes the funny bone of any modern day movie watcher. The opening titles inform us that the Coen Brothers O Brother, Where Art Thou is based on Homers The Odyssey. The Coens claimed their Fargo was based on a true story, but later confided it wasnt; this time they confess they havent actually read The Odyssey. Still, theyve absorbed the spirit. Like its inspiration, this movie is one darn thing after another. The film is a Homeric journey through Mississippi during the Depressionor rather, through all of the images of that time and place that have been trickling down through pop culture ever since. There are even walk-ons for characters inspired by Babyface Nelson and the blues singer Robert Johnson, who speaks of a crossroads soul-selling rendezvous with the devil. Bluegrass music is at the heart of the film, as it was of Bonnie and Clyde, and there are images of chain gangs, sharecropper cottages, cotton fields, populist politicians, river baptisms, hobos on freight trains, patent medicines, 25-watt radio stations and Klan rallies. The movies title is lifted from Preston Sturges 1941 comedy Sullivans Travels (it was the uplifting movie the hero wanted to make to redeem himself), and from Homer we get a Cyclops, sirens bathing on rocks, a hero named Ulysses, and his wife Penny, which is no doubt short for Penelope. If these elements dont exactly add up, maybe theyre not intended to. Homers epic grew out of the tales of many storytellers who went before; their episodes were timed and intended for a nights recitation. Quite possibly no one before Homer saw the developing work as a whole. In the same spirit, O Brother contains sequences that are wonderful in themselveslovely short filmsbut the movie never really shapes itself into a whole. (Ebert, par 2) This movie takes place in some unknown po -dunk country boy town in Mississippi, where only chain gangs and old Ford model   roamed the long dirt roads. The film begins with the three main characters: Ulysses Everett McGill (George Clooney), Pete Hogwallop (John Turturro), and Delmar ODonnel (Tim Blake Nelson) escaping from their chain gang crew in the middle of nowhere. As these hardened idiotic criminals embark on their treasure seeking journey, they quickly find that their old foolish ways of lying, cheating, and stealing is no way to live if youre trying to be a proper gentleman. With the hopes of striking it rich and starting a new life on the straight and narrow path, these three men run into some pretty interesting characters along the way. One of the first characters we meet on these dysfunctional newly found brothers journey is the blind profit. He is particularly important because he informs these men, that the treasure theyre seeking will not be found and they will be getting something they never expected. But this is of little concern for our heroic idiots because, after all, this new fortune message came from a blind black man ridding a hand car, checking the train tracks. This is also where you first see the group somewhat unknowingly elect Ulysses as the leader, the reason hes elected is possibly due to his outspokenness, and wordy explanations that only confuse the other two blubbering idiots. The leader of the trio, Everett Ulysses McGill fancies himself as the brains of the outfit. Vanity may be the reason Everett sleeps with a hair net on to keep his pomaded locks in place, but you wouldnt be surprised to learn he thought it helped contain his bursting brain. In the vast scheme of things, though, Everett is only a few bricks closer to a full load than his cohorts, Pete who has a hair-trigger temper, and sweet, simpleminded Delmar. (Taylor, par 2) As our newly found chained companions embark further into their journey the long arm of the law tries catches up with them. .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219 , .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219 .postImageUrl , .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219 , .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219:hover , .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219:visited , .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219:active { border:0!important; } .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219:active , .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219 .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u62dabff80776db00c75bd949ffeca219:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Film Review - Dear White People EssayHere is where you meet the leader of the inmates chain gang, his stoic like expressions and inferior position gives you the sense that he believes he is in a godlike position. Luckily for our heroes, they continuously escape his clutches safely and their battle for the treasure continues. Our next character introduction takes place at the cross roads on a lonely dirt road, here is where you meet a colored boy by the name of Tommy, who sold his soul to the devil for the gift of guitar playing. The introduction of Tommy is really the first glimpse where you hear these backyard country boys sing; they have the voice of angles and they form a musical group called the Soggy Bottom Boys. This music group sings with a melody that gently touches your heart and speaks to your soul. Unbeknownst to our characters this newly formed group is really a treasure that will pay off big in the end. One of the biggest turning points in the movie is when all the characters are in the woods and a multitude of Jesus believers join together for a good old fashion baptism. This scene is particularly important because here is where Pete and Delmar miraculously change their ways, for they have been saved by the grace of God. This scene makes most movie watchers get the feeling of a religious based movie. After this point if you pay close attention to the symbolism you can directly relate everything in the movie to a religious aspect, everything from the butterflies that continuously surround Delmar to Ulysses seven daughters, and in the end the flood that washes everything away. As atypical as any movie currently available in a theater, O Brother, Where Art Thou? Offers musical numbers, car chases, shootouts, magical realism, natural disasters, and more Dapper Dan hair care product than anyone could possibly want. The film has its share of standout sequences. The best of these involve John Goodman as Big Dan, a one-eyed Bible Salesman who cant stop talking. Then theres a scene where the trio steals a pie from a windowsill and leaves behind money to pay for their theft. And theres an encounter with three sirens which results in an alarming transformation for one of the protagonists. As fun as O Brother, Where Art Thou can be, it has an overlong, dragged-out feel. In essence, there seems to be less material than a 105-minute feature can support. And, as is often the case in Coen Brothers movies, there is minimal character development. We learn a little bit about Ulysses, but almost nothing about anyone else. In large part, were willing to stick with these three individuals because the actors playing them did a good job. Clooney radiates charisma as he slides into character. John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson are both effective foils, and the entire supporting cast (which includes Coen veterans like Goodman and Holly Hunter) falls into place. (Berardinelli, par. 3) Some of the tougher movies critics like James Berardinelli (writer for ReelViews) says, At their best, the Coens have the ability to make viewers squirm in their seats, let loose with uncontrolled bursts of laughter, or both. Unfortunately, O Brother, Where Art Thou does none of these things. Its inarguably offbeat and moderately entertaining, but theres nothing remarkable or memorable about this motion picture. The movie will undoubtedly resonate with some audience members, but Im not one of them. (par. 3) Despite the negative reflection by some of its movie critics, O Brother Where Art Thou is probably one that will go into my own classic archive, as being one of the funniest movies ever made. Being an everyday film loving American, I have to be honest and say that I didnt get the symbolic relation to the movie The Odyssey, but I would suggest that anyone interested in a movie with cheep laughs and quirky humor make the time to see this film. .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9 , .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9 .postImageUrl , .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9 , .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9:hover , .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9:visited , .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9:active { border:0!important; } .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9:active , .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9 .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u4c064172dc804e0bebffa3201fb566e9:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Price of Greatness is Responsibility EssayAll the characters in this movie seem to be on complete opposite ends of the spectrum. But thats possibly why the introductions of these crazy characters make this movie enjoyable for all ages. The musical songs throughout the film almost make you want to stand up in your living room and have a good old fashion ho- down. The actors development in this movie is as entertaining as any must see flick of the year. George Clooney did an especially good job in making his character come to life as did all our other characters.

Most of these accidents could have been avoided by the crew if they would have been communicating to each other better. Some common errors that occur among the crew are poor task delegation, assertiveness, and distractions. Crew training in communication and teamwork will increase the crews performance level. Programs like Crew Resource Management (CRM) have been developed to try to help the crews work together and reduce the human factor in accidents. CRM includes training in leadership/followership, assertiveness, management, communication, teamwork, decision making, and task delegation. Through programs like CRM crews learn to work together as a team, and when they are working together it is less likely therell be an accident. INTORDUCTION Background The cause for most aircraft accidents (65%) are by crew error (FAA News, 1996). When the Crews performance level is low due to poor teamwork and communication this is when accidents happen. How can crew error be reduced? Even though human error cant be reduced completely through constant training and effort by the crew performance will increase and accidents will be reduced. Purpose/Audience This report is intended for a general audience and will show how important it is for the flight and cabin crew to work together and communicate as a team. This report will also examine the CRM program. Sources Sources have been obtained for this report from the Internet and from the Waldo Library, Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan. Scope Teamwork and communication are a critical factor in the crews operation of aircraft. Accidents can be prevented when these two factors are considered. COLLECTED DATA Importance of Communication amoung the Crew People communicate to each other every day. From a kids talking to their parents about their report card, to doctors working in an operating room. In order for us to understand one another we must be clear in what we say. For instance, if a doctor tells a nurse to pull a certain plug on a machine, hed better be clear on what he says or the nurse might end up harming a patient. Likewise, the cabin and flight crew must work together. In a typical cockpit the flight crew is very busy, and they need to be well organized to handle the many tasks they perform. They need to communicate properly and clearly for safe operations, if they dont their actions could result in a tragedy. Main Cause of Aircraft Accidents Mechanical problems and technical malfunctions do contribute to aircraft accidents, but human error is the main cause, accounting for 65% of the accidents (FAA News, 1996). See the pie chart in figure 1. This figure is quit high, and if it were possible to reduce human error the accident rate would drop significantly. Accidents that occur because of human error are not a direct result of just one error but of a chain of errors. The human error chain results when one bad decision leads to another which leads to the accident. The question is, how can we reduce human error in the cockpit? Studies have shown that most incidents could have been prevented if communication and leadership skills were improved. .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834 , .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834 .postImageUrl , .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834 , .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834:hover , .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834:visited , .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834:active { border:0!important; } .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834:active , .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834 .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8cf9d977f59ba28a434674c613bba834:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Oedipus's Crime EssayDuties of Crew Members In order to have a clear understanding of whos involved in the crew, these positions with their duties will be discussed. The Three Waves of Feminism Essay Example

The Three Waves of Feminism Essay Example The Three Waves of Feminism Paper The Three Waves of Feminism Paper The Three Big Waves of Feminism First-Wave Feminism: Women’s Right to Vote In 1776, the then First Lady of the United States was the first to raise her about women’s rights, telling her husband to â€Å"remember the ladies† in his drafting of new laws, yet it took more than 100 years for men like John Adams to actually do so. With the help of half a dozen determined, and in this case white upper-middle-class, women the first-wave feminism, which spans from the 19th century to the early 20th century, finally led to their goal after 72 years of protesting. The Nineteenth Amendment, which secured the rights for women to vote finally passed in 1920. This grand victory brought other reforms along, including reforms in the educational system, in healthcare and in the workplace. Second-Wave Feminism: Personal Means Political The First-Wave was significant to feminism as it established a safe footing from where women could start off. The second wave of feminism, however, was crucial to everything that followed after. This wave marked everything the early 1960s to the late 1980s. Of course feminism didn’t die out completely, in between the first and second wave feminism, as the media tried to make many people believe. In fact feminism was still a topic among women; they just didn’t crowd at polling stations anymore. Instead many small groups of women activists were fighting for birth control or the women peace movement. Then, during the Second World War women suddenly played a major role as work forces and could get a taste of independency. Though after the war, now that the men were back with their glorified heroism, it was expected of women to silently head back into the kitchen and act out their â€Å"natural† role as mother and wife, which has been pressed onto them from the very start. Obviously that didn’t sit well with many of them. However before the the Women’s Liberation movement and before the Sexual Revolution in 1968, there have been the Civil Rights Movement and the antiwar movement. Those two were the first two major social movements to be displayed through television, as well as they were the forerunners of the following feminist movement. They showed that women, too, could become political. Women from Rosa Parks to Coretta Scott King made political protest seem necessary and encouraged many women all over America, regardless of race and ethnic background, to speak up for their rights. It was the feminist movement’s turn then to get real personal and by getting real personal it didn’t get any less political. Women had enough of the sexual harassment and domestic violence going on behind doors, of being kept out of law and medical schools and thus being restricted to low paid jobs, of being confined not only in domestic but also in public spheres. To make it short: women had enough of being looked down at. With these problems the key demands of this movement were: â€Å"the right to safe and legal abortion, the right to accessible and affordable childcare, and the equal opportunities in education and employment†. Another demand was more support of battered womens shelters, and changes in custody and divorce law. This wave of feminism brought up the most of changes regarding women and laws. Affirmative Action rights for women were extended and acts like the Women’s Educational Equity Act, which allowed educational equality for women, the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, which prohibited â€Å"sex discrimination on the basis of pregnancy†, were passed. Amongst these acts a law passed in 1975 that required the U. S. Military Academies to admit women, as well as marital rape was made illegal and the no-fault divorce legal. Even though the last two laws were not recognized by all states, it was still considered an enormous success. In the early 1980s the biggest strength of the second wave, the grand diversity of feminism and organisations, suddenly became its biggest weakness as the media started the so called â€Å"feminist sex wars† by pitting women, especially two of them, against each other, trying to destroy the image of sisterhood pointedly. Even though the Women’s Liberation movement clearly refused to pick a leader, the media singled out Gloria Steinem as the leader of this movement. Gloria Steinem was a single and childless career woman, who compared marriage to prostitution and insisted that â€Å"if men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament†. On the other side there was the media’s darling Phyllis Schlafly, who almost single-handedly brought down the Equal Rights Amendment. Also known as the ERA, this mendment demanded that the â€Å"equality of rights under the law shall not be denied nor abridged by the United States or any state on the account of sex†. It was first introduced by Alice Paul in 1923, a woman truly ahead of her time, but didn’t get ratified by enough states to get legalized. Whether this happened because of Phyllis Schlafly herself or the way media presented the feminists of that time is debatable. In the end the ERA may not have gotten legalized and wo men were still oppressed, but sisterhood was very much alive and blooming. In sisterhood women found strength and with this new found strength they started breaking the blockades which had been keeping them from climbing the career ladder and decided that it was long past time to start taking charge of their own lives. Third-Wave Feminism: Finally Diversity After ERA was defeated, a vast amount of media coverage over the supposed â€Å"death of feminism† appeared on the TV screen of Americans. Those who truly believed them were surely gobsmacked by the third wave of feminism which found its start in the mid-90’s. Caused by the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings and the evident spite and disdain the accuser, Anita Hill, was met with by the all-male jury, women decided that once men crossed one line too many. The most obvious difference between the third wave movement and its sisters the first and second wave movements was the embracement of diversity. With feminism becoming global it became available for women of any race as well as any social class, but also threw away the mass media’s â€Å"ugly braless bubblehead† stereotype of feminists with women like Pinkfloor stating: â€Å"Its possible to have a push-up bra and a brain at the same time. Being feminine and a feminist was no longer mutually exclusive and with the so-called â€Å"grrl† feminists, women started to show up as strong and empowering, while reclaiming everything feminine, from wearing high-heels to lipstick. The key demands of the Third Wave are much harder to pin point, as the range of issues grew by women not only concerning themselves with the gender oppression but with economic oppression and environmental issues as well. However one crucial aspect was the deconstruction of categorical thinking and its endless attack on unrealistic beauty ideals set for women ever since television was invented. The third wave of feminism has not ended yet. It is history in the making, as new issues to deal with arise as soon as old ones are solved. The probably greatest achievement of these waves is the awareness of oppression they’ve spread, the feeling of community between women they created as well as turning feminism from an abstract thought into a widely accepted truth.

A critical analysis of the concept of addiction with reference to drug Essay

A critical analysis of the concept of addiction with reference to drug misuse - Essay Example those that are harmful for health such as Marijuana, cocaine, opium, hallucinogens and many others, people become addicted to the usage of those drugs (Giannini 1997). The drugs that are prescribed by the doctors do not appear to be harmful for the users but those that are harmful and are used without the help of any doctor or in terms of self-medication come up with negative consequences in terms of health and life security. The drugs that are prescribed the doctors can also be considered as abusive when a person gets addict to the drugs. After being addicted, the tolerance level of a person increases due to which, an increased amount of drug is required by the person that can harm him/her in terms of his/her health (Kalivas and Volkow 2005). Drugs that are considered as causing addiction are mostly illegal drugs such as cocaine, nicotine, caffeine, heroin, Marijuana, opium and many others (Goodman 1990). When people start misusing the drugs to a harmful level, they become addict to the drugs due to which, they have to depend on the drugs for their physical sustenance and normal health. This dependency on drugs is not considered a negligible issue as the number of people who can be called as dependent on drugs and addicts are increasing day by day (Nestler and Malenka 2004). The addiction to drugs causes many dangers for the health of men as well as women. Illegal usage of drugs causes such consequences that are not facilitating for the drug users. Women are categorized as mostly disadvantageous in terms of misuse of drugs because of their future or current pregnancy (Giannini 1997). The misuse of drugs causes many types of diseased effects in the users due to which, they are unable to lead normal lives and face many health issues. People always seek out for drugs in spite of knowing the dangerous consequences being caused by drugs because of their becoming addicts. People use drugs on a regular basis due to many factors. Many people make use of drugs because

Race in Turn of the Century America Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Race in Turn of the Century America - Essay Example The problem of racial confusion was quickly becoming a serious issue, in the early twentieth century. This is because of the lack of a unified government, which would establish common grounds with racial equity and rights (King & Ruggles, 1990). After the end of the Civil War, eleven Southern States introduced national policies that further supported â€Å"the problem of color-line†, in relation to immigrants and African Americans, through the First World War. For example, ten southern states introduced laws prohibiting the mixing of races in ferries, railways, and steamboats (King & Ruggles, 1990). For instance, Atlanta, from 1908, introduced racially segregated elevators. Additionally, taxicabs were separated in Florida, Birmingham, Jacksonville, and Mississippi, Alabama. Similarly, it was illegal for Black and white baseball clubs to play, in proximity, in Atlanta (King & Ruggles, 1990). Change in welfare policy, after civil wars also promoted â€Å"the problem of color-li ne†. The Northern changed the social welfare policy to provide government assistances equally and help recipients become self-independence (King & Ruggles, 1990). This made the Southerners to further entrenchment of racism and slavery as a sign of disrespect to the Northerners, who defeated them in the civil wars. The Southern States that encouraged racism include Mississippi, South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas, Virginia, Tennessee, and Florida (King & Ruggles, 1990).

YouTube increases company Essay Example for Free

YouTube increases company Essay Introduction Nowadays, numerous people spend a lot of time using the Internet. Therefore, many companies invest substantial capital onInternet advertising to increase their revenue. YouTube is a useful method to advertise company produce, because 3 billion people watch YouTube every day (Henry. 2011). There are different typesof customer, so many companies focus on YouTube for this market. However, some people think YouTube is not a useful method for advertising; because many people may ignore the 15 seconds mandatory video advertisements or may not concentrate on the video advertisements (Fisher. 2011). This research considered whether YouTube is a good advertising method to encourage people to buy new products, to help company to increases revenue. Aims Find out how YouTube increases company revenue Find out whether YouTube changes people’s shopping habits Find out if YouTube is a useful advertising tool for a company 1.2 Objectives Give advice to companies as to how YouTube may be used to increase company revenue Offer advice as to ways in which YouTube may influence changes in shopping habits Method of Research The project is based on secondary research and primary research. Secondary research information was used to gain information about YouTube and Internet advertising from academic books, journals, newspapers and websites. A survey was conducted in order to discover the attitude and opinions of the general public. A questionnaire was used as, according to McFedries (2008) questionnaires are considered to be the most effective and efficient way of conducting this type of primary research because it allows primary data and information from the interviewees directly. The respondents consisted of 20 international students attending LSI school in Portsmouth. It was conducted on the 20th May 2013. Findings from secondary research YouTube is one of the most successful websites in the world. Many people may watch and listen to this website. As a result, YouTube can be an effective advertising medium in marketing. Therefore, many companies spend a lot of  money on YouTube to increase their revenue. It is possible that this form of advertising can change people’s shopping habit as, while they are looking at YouTube information, they are exposed to the advertising clips, which accompany the information. However, it may be the case that people have the choice to ignore the advertising and just focus on the information they want to watch. In this case, there is debate about whether the advertising is wasted. Nevertheless, there appears to sufficient evidence to demonstrate that the money spent on such advertising is profitable. Firstly, YouTube net revenue was $2.6 billion in 2012 an increase of 35% compared to the second quarter of 2011 (Larry. 2012). From this result it can be seen that many companies spend a lot of money on YouTube advertising, because in this generation, time spent on computers is increasing and many people find some entertainment from YouTube. 3 billion people watch YouTube every day (Henry. 2011). Many companies can see that YouTube has different types of customer. So it is a potentially useful tool to promote their company. For example, VEVO is the only company that has legitimate music channels on YouTube and it has many subscribers. So, when people watch a music video, it will include advertising about that music or other products. When people are interested in that music or products they can get more information and buy them. Secondly, YouTube will make an analysis of every user, such as what they often view. Then YouTube will handle the data and will propose some similar video to users. Also, YouTube will give the data to some companies which are related to that video to do some research inform them about user habits. Then, some companies will add advertising in that video let users know their company has some products that are suitable for them and change customer’s shopping habits (YouTube. 2013). Finally, many people do not believe YouTube advertising feasibility, because many people may just watch the 15 seconds then ignore it. So, many people question YouTube advertising. With the increasing availability of advances in technology, the advertising strategies have improved and may encourage more visitors to watch the adverts rather than to ignore them. According to a recent research carried out by Fisher (2011), only 30% of YouTube advertisements are skipped. Findings from Primary Research This research used a sample of 20 people, those are LSI students and  teacher,20 questionnaires were returned and the interviewees answered all questions. According to the results from the first question which asked people which website they usually use to find out new music videos, it can be seen from appendix (b) that 80%chose YouTube to find out new music videos, also 15% used Google and just 5% used QQ Music, but nobody used Yahoo and Facebook to find out the new music video. The second question researched how much time do people spend on average on YouTube everyday, it is shown by appendix (c), that near 35% of interviewees spend 3 to 4 hours on YouTube everyday.Likewise, there were 25% of interviewees who spend 1 to 2 hours per day and the number of interviewees who spend less than 1 hour and over 4 hours was the same, and it was 20%. The third question asked people about their habits from before the changes in 2012, how often did they watch a full advertisement on YouTube, it is shown in appendix (d), that 60% on average, they justsaw it between 2 to 4 times, the number of people who saw it between 5 to 7 times and once every ten times was the same, it was 20%. The fourth question researched the changes that happened after 2012, and how oftenpeople watched full adverting on YouTube, it is shown in appendix (e), that 35% of interviewees saw the advertisement that appeared between 5 to 7 times. 30% of interviewees saw it between 8 to 9 times, the number of respondents who just saw it between 2 to 4 times and people who watched it every time is the same – 15%. The fifth question, participant agreed that mandatory video advertisements are useful for them, is shown in appendix (f), the number of participants who think are sometimes very useful and rarely very useful is the same – 35%.Likewise, there were 25 % of participant think are usually very useful and it just had 5% of participant think are very useful. The sixth question, people agreed that mandatory video advertisements can increase your interest and as a result buy advertised products, it can be seen from appendix (G), 40% of the interviewees agree YouTube mandatory increase their interest and encourage them to buy the advertised products, whereas only 5% strongly disagree this point. However, nobody strongly agree that mandatory video advertisements can increase them interest and as a result buy advertised products. The seventh question, people agreed that YouTube could change their shopping habits, it can be seen from appendix (H), the agree rating score of 4 is 35% and the disagree rating score of 2 is 20%, representing that more  interviewees YouTube can change their shopping habits. Since the percentage of people strongly agree and strongly disagree are the same of 5%, a conclusion cannot be drawn. The eighth question, have they ever bought a product advertised on YouTube after watching the video, is shown in appendix (I), that 60% of interviewees have bought a product advertised on YouTube after watching the video and the remaining 40% said they did not purchase the product. The last question is what factors will make them interested in the online video advertisements, is shown in appendix (J), that 40% of participants said they are already interested in the product, also 20% of participantssaid because the pop stars advertisethe product. Thenumbers of people who think are sound effects and they need the products is the same – 15%, there are just 10% of participantsare interested in the online video advertisements due to gift vouchers. Discussion of Findings The survey was designed to find out how YouTube increase company revenue, whether YouTube change people’s shopping habits and find out if YouTube is a useful advertising tool for a company. Firstly, the findings demonstrate that 3 billion people watch YouTube every day (Henry. 2011), the VEVO music company channel has the most subscribers and has different types of customers. So it is a potentially useful tool to promote their company. From the questionnaire, it can be seen from appendix (B)that clearly there are 80% interviewees usually use YouTube to find out about new music. Therefore, YouTube is a succeedmethod to advertise company produce. Secondly, appendix (D) and appendix (E)investigate whether YouTube advertising strategy improvements increase the number of viewers. Appendix (D) represents pre advertising strategy improvements, when interviewees just usually (60%) see on average, between 2 to 4 times the advertisement appeared. On the other hand, it can be seen from appendix (E) that after advertising strategies improved, the same group of them will seethe full advertising, on average, between 2 to 4 times the advertisement appeared decline to 15%. Likewise, the same group of interviewees will see on average, between 5 to 7 and 8 to 9 times the advertisement appeared increase to 35% and 30%. Also it can seen from appendix (G) thatonly 5 % of interviewees strongly disagree that mandatory video advertisements can increase interest and as a result buy advertised products. This result of this questionnaire is similar to the  secondary research, which supports that advertising strategies improved in 2012 encouraged more people to watch the full adverting on YouTube and also increased people’s interest to buy advertised products. Thirdly, it can be seen from appendix (F) that nobody thinks the mandatory video advertisements are never useful. As shown from appendix (H), only 5% of interviewees strongly disagree the YouTube advertisement cannot change their shopping habit. Likewise, YouTube can increase company revenue, because it can be seen from appendix (I, where 60% of interviews had bought a product advertised on YouTube after watching the video. So YouTube it can influence people’s shopping habits. Limitations of the Research This is the project allocated and the lack of experience is the biggest problem to be faced. Moreover, there were just 20 respondents of the questionnaireand the survey covers only the students in LSI. In addition, due to the time constraint, findings from secondary research contain limited academic resources. Finding more information on books and asking more respondents may improve further research. Conclusions Recommendations To sum up, it is clear that there is 80% of interviewees used YouTube to find out new music, so YouTube had many different types of customers and so it is good for advertising companies’ products. Moreover, the improved YouTube advertising strategies in 2012 had raised the number of intervieweeswho watch more the mandatory video advertisements and it can change people’s shopping habits. These findings demonstrate that YouTube canincrease people’sinterest and as a result encourage them to buy advertised products. According to the questionnaires, it is suggested that companies can employ Pop Star to advertise the product and put more sound effect to make people interested in the online video advertisements. Also YouTube may conduct more research to find out customer’sshopping habit and to show the most suitable advertising for increase in viewers. References Chaffey, D. (2003). All Quiet On The Western Front - Film Versus Novel Essay -- Erich Maria

â€Å"All Quiet on the Western Front† is a novel by Erich Maria Remarque, published in 1928 about Paul Baumer, a 19 year old student, who is persuaded by his schoolmaster to join the Imperial German Army. He goes to the western front where he and his comrades witnesses the horror and brutality of war through a series of deadly, meaningless battles that left an entire generation traumatized. The book was adapted to a movie in 1930 as well as 1979. Having recently viewed the latter, I would strongly recommend that anyone read the novel rather than watch the 1979 film. To clarify, I am not immediately against a film remake just because it is not the original; at times it is interesting to see how a book is interpreted, however books are often difficult to make into a film and unfortunately, â€Å"All Quiet on the Western Front† was no exception. Not only was the film an poor adaptation, but it also was not visually appealing, the acting was somewhat poor, the wrong parts were emphasized and the atmosphere of the movie was inferior to that of the novel. When any book is made into a movie, one of the most difficult tasks is interpreting the visual aspects, and viewers are often disappointed by the result as it is not how they imagined it while reading the book. While the â€Å"All Quiet on the Western Front† novel was limited only by the reader's imagination, The movie's action scenes were anything but realistic and the special effects did not stand the test of time as modern films contain much more sophisticated special effects... While movies should never be judged by special effects alone, the film was certainly not enhanced by them. In fact modern audiences might even consider the effects as humorous which was certainly not the intention. Mo... ...the 1979 film adaptation of â€Å"All Quiet on the Western Front† failed to live up to the novel. Because it was made in the 1970's, the special effects were unrealistic and inferior to what one pictured while reading the novel. Compared to the novel, the film was also practically censored in terms of how graphic it was. Remarque intentionally made the novel graphic in order to present the anti-war theme, therefore the effectiveness of the film was diminished. The acting in the film was also mediocre and disappointing, and the cast was not well chosen. The trenches in the movie were also slightly softened from how they were described in the novel. Paul Baumer's thoughts and feelings were also not presented as well as they were in the novel. Ultimately, the novel was much more effective at delivering its anti war message, and telling the story. I is not happy. Penispuffer.

Ad-Comm Group “Whitebook”: Cross-Marketing Platform for Luxury Brands in Japan Essay

1. What is a Whitebook? What role(s) does it play in the Marketing strategy of Ad-comm’s client companies? Answers 15 lines maximum. Whitebook is a cross marketing platform, a magazine that is published in Japan every 4 months and which displays nine luxury brands in nine diverse types of product. The magazine is customized for each luxury sponsors. The Whitebook plays an important role in terms of marketing strategy as it is a brand ambassador and CRM tool. As the Whitebook is mainly distributed through sponsors, the Whitebook targets a prequalified small group of costumers but right ones, right at the beginning. Being displayed in the magazine can be seen a recognition of being a top luxury brand and be therefore an award. The Magazine creates a strong relationship between the brands and the costumers, as the costumers feel privileged to receive special attention from the brand. Moreover the Whitebook organizes event as well, which gathers customers and one brand. Those events gives the opportunity for luxury brands to create a personal relationship (â€Å"face-to-face† relationship) with its customers, by telling its heritage and answering questions. 2. Take the perspective of the general manager of Porsche Japan. See more: Old Age Problem essay How would you assess the cost effectiveness or ROI of investing 20 million Yen a year to sponsor Whitbook? Would you be willing to be a sponsor? Why or why not? Answer by using a break-even analysis, and by calculating the expected customer lifetime value (i. e. today’s expected value of a customer’s purchases over the course of his/her life as a Porsche customer). 1 to 2 pages. a. You must know what a break-even analysis is: this is when your return/revenue covers your investment – in other words: how many cars to sell to repay for the investment in Whitebook? b. Customer Lifetime value: refer to the last class definition – expected value of a customer over the course of his/her life as a customer = selling price of a Porsche x number of Porsches purchased in a lifetime. Be creative by using the data of the case and common sense. There is no magic formula. I will take your assumptions into consideration. c. Then the cost effectiveness can be assessed by comparing to competitive offerings Porsche sales increased by 4. 55 ( 3000/658= 4. 55 – p. 8) in 6 years. For a luxury brand, democratization of the product also means loss of prestige and exclusivity. Whitebook is a way to keep the luxury image of the brand by creating a special relationship with the best costumers. 20 million Yen represents 2. 4% of the total marketing budget (p. 8). Assuming that an average price of Porsche is 75 000$ USD , in 6 years they have sold for 175 650 000$ (75 000 x 2320) . 20 million Yen is equal to 214 241. 04$ USD which corresponds to 1 285 446. 24$ USD in 6 years. In terms of break-even analysis and still assuming the average price of 75 000 $, they need to sell 3 cars (2. 86) (214 241. 04 / 75 000) per year to repay their investment in Whitebook. However, the case mentions that â€Å"10% of the VIP customers own 8-9 Porsches† (p. 8), therefore we can assume that Porsche company sells at least 3 cars per year and therefore sponsoring Whitebook is profitable. In terms of Costumer Lifetime value, we shall still assume the average price of 75 000$ USD per car and the number of Porsches purchased in a lifetime of 8. 5 (â€Å"8-9 Porsches† own over lifetime – p. 8). The Costumer Lifetime Value is therefore equal to 637 500 (75 000 x 8.5). Finally, in terms of cost effectiveness, if we look at exhibit 9, we see that the manufacturer’s suggested retail price of Whitebook is best advantageous compared to other selected print media in Japan. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price is relatively low (5 000 000 Yen) compared to the number of pages and the location. Let’s take 25ans’. The MSRP is 4 200 000 Yen for 2 pages on the back cover; compared to 800 000Yen more for Whitebook (therefore 1. 19 more expensive (5 000 000 / 4 200 000 = 1. 19) ) for 3 times more pages inside the magazine for Whitebook. It is then clear that Whitebook is more profitable compared to less expensive magazines in terms of cost effectiveness. Moreover 25ans’ targets women’s luxury, however Porsche and fast cars are commonly known to be of mainly great interest for men. Concerning Esquire, the MSRP is 3 200 000 Yen of 2 pages on the back cover, Whitebook is 1 800 000 more (therefore 1. 5626 more expensive (5 000 000 / 32 000 000)) for 3 times more pages inside the magazine. Thus, Whitebook magazine is more profitable than Esquire. Moreover Esquire targets Men’s fashion/lifestyle only, however purchasing a Porsche can also involve women (Porsche Cayenne for example). Concerning Nikkei Business, the MSRP is 5 680 000 Yen of 2 pages on the back cover which target business customers. Compare to Whitebook, Nikkei Business is 1. 136 more expensive than Whitebook for less pages. Moreover the Nikkei Business target only business Concerning Asahi Newspaper, the MSRP is 22 500 000 Yen for full page. Compare toe Whitebook, Asahi Newspaper is 4. 5 more expensive. Moreover, Asahi Newspaper targets general public, however Porsche wants to keep the luxury prestige and exclusive image of the brand by investing in a magazine, the target readers doesn’t therefore correspond to the main aim of Porsche. In conclusion, Whitebook is the best investment in terms of cost effectiveness compared to competitive offerings. 3. Put yourself in the shoes of Andreas Dannenberg. Whitebook exploits opportunities (and leverages strength, addresses weaknesses, and counter threats) in the luxury market and advertising industry, and it helps Ad-comm stay ahead of potential capability improvements by Japanese and multinational competitors. What is Whitebook to you? What role(s) does it play in the marketing strategy of Ad-comm itself? Answer by using a SWOT analysis (for Ad-comm) to understand internal and external strategic position. 1 to 2 pages. In terms of Strengths: * Whitebook enables to be independent from Japanese Players * Doesn’t have to be subcontracted by Japanese agencies * Target the right costumers. * Plays a role of CRM tool * Create privilege relationships between the brands and the costumers * Maintain the luxury and exclusive image of the sponsors * Create events to build a face to face relationship and build a trust relationship in the long run with VIP costumers -> the brand tells stories and heritage to the customer and the Japanese consumption, customers are choosing a brand mainly because of its heritage, recommendations of experts and experiences of family and friends. * Plays a role of brand ambassador * Enable luxury companies to display the corporate portfolio * Enable luxury brands to make their cash flows easier. In terms of Weaknesses: * Limited to Japanese market * Limited to the Japanese market * Implementation on international market requires global corporate decision In terms of Opportunities: * Cross-marketing platform * Select prequalified targeted and top-tier customer * Create a unique virtual experience for privilege guests as well trough its website and entry key * Track behaviors of target customers * The website tracks behaviors of target customers * Create events which can be an opportunity to launch a new product to a right target costumer * Enable luxury companies to get new costumers. * Work as a CRM tool In terms of Threats: * No competitors at the moment because is very selective and the nurture the relationship with the brand. * However, competitors can come in the market, target also luxury clientele with more luxury brands or more subcategories * New competitors can come and create other type of cross-marketing platform like a privilege club which enables the brands to meet * New competitors can come an create the same magazine suited for the global market or USA market which number of customers are greater. 4. What would you do with the expansion opportunities described at the end of the case (pp. 10-13)? Would you pursue: (a) increasing the number of sponsors I the current Whitebook? (b) replicating the current Whitebook in overseas market; or (c) developing an alternative Whitebook focused on the new â€Å"edgy† brand market? Why? Answer with Pros and Cons in 1 to 2 pages. (a) Increasing the number of sponsors I the current Whitebook Pros: * Increase flexibility when planning events * Increase quantity of events (number of events) * Increase quality of events, as more VIP customers and sponsor companies are available * Increase the use of CRM tool * Make the relationship between brand and consumer more visible Cons: * Additional cost could offset the fixed costs of production * Losing credibility * Losing trust with the brands * Losing luxury appeal because luxury is based on scarcity and exclusivity (b) Replicating the current Whitebook in overseas market (the best option because:) Pros: * Minimize additional effort and attention required to Whitebook * Provide learning opportunity for the account managers. * Can introduce new categories in the book * Multinational sponsor already present in the Japanese version can be included in the overseas version * Already implemented in US, Singapore Cons: * There’s a small budget required by sponsors * The decisions so fare are regional and not on corporate level * Changing the marketing strategy at a global level will be uncontrollable for Whitebook unless they change the whole corporate structure, which possible (c) Developing an alternative Whitebook focused on the new â€Å"edgy† brand market Pros: * Maintain most loyal costumers * Help to acquire innovative customers. * Guarantee of 50 000 targeted customers * Involves high-margin brand segments * Developing new relationships with new companies Cons: * Should redirect the target customers on young customers * Being part of a community takes out their own personality and uniqueness * Because edgy brands target young customers and customers prefer interactive marketing tools so edgy brand prefer to invest their marketing budget and events or promotions rather that printing marketing * Change the value of luxury image of the book * Because luxury is based on exclusivity and scarcity, including edgy brands will damage this luxury image.

Analysis Of The Lottery Essay - 1446 Words

These two short stories characterized many of the same elements, but also have many stark contrasts. When I was reading them, they both stood out with several core themes. Traditions and how communities thrive were the backbones to the two stories, and I constantly found myself comparing them metaphorically to what we do today. Poisonous or potentially problematic traditions often justify themselves as sustaining, as in life would only be worse without them, and therefore no one questions them. In The Lottery, the scene is immediately set within the town square, and we zoom in on a gathering that clearly of great import. We are enlightened that there is to be a lottery, which immediately invokes a positive feeling in the reader. A lottery tends to signify something won, something gained, or at the very least lotteries tend to give us hope at little to no cost for us. Throughout the story, we learn the true intention behind the lottery, however. Prior to the lottery beginning, we are told that the entire village, upon gathering, has also amassed a large pile of rocks that were gathered primarily by the children. It seems to be a very family-centered village, as well as patriarchal, since the men were the last to gather around the ring, and the leaders and instigators were all men as well. Of the numerous reason a lottery involving the entire town could be had, the simple, almost mundane justification for it was intriguing and bothersome all at once. The lottery was simplyShow MoreRelatedCritical Analysis for The Lottery1205 Words   |  5 PagesCritical Analysis for â€Å"The Lottery† Shirley Jacksons short story, The Lottery, aroused much controversy and criticism in 1948, following its debut publication, in the New Yorker.
